Ford Ranger Canopy Guide: PX, Next-Gen, Raptor and Super Duty

Ford Ranger Canopy Guide: PX, Next-Gen, Raptor and Super Duty

The Ford Ranger has had two dual cab tubs since 2012: the PX series (PX, PX2 and PX3, 2012–2022) and the wider Next-Gen (P703). FORGED X makes an aluminium canopy for each, plus versions listed for the Raptor of both generations and the new Ranger Super Duty. Pick the canopy that matches your generation; the Raptor uses the same tub as the standard Ranger of its generation.

PX or Next-Gen?

The PX series ran from 2012 to 2022 through three updates — PX, PX2 from 2015 and PX3 from 2018. The tub never changed, so one canopy fits every PX-series dual cab, from XL and XLS through XLT and Wildtrak.

The Next-Gen Ranger has a new body and a wider tub. It is easy to spot from the front: the Next-Gen has C-shaped LED headlight surrounds. Utes built in 2022 can be either generation, so check the front end or the compliance plate, or send us your VIN.

Solid sides or dog windows on a Ranger

Rangers do everything in Australia, from fleet and trade work to long touring trips. Solid sides suit work and fleet utes: nothing on the sides to break and nothing on show when the ute is parked on site.

Dog windows suit a Wildtrak or Raptor set up for touring. Kerbside access to a fridge or drawer system without walking around the ute, airflow through the tub when you are camped, and a clear view out the rear.

Both options have a glazed lift-up rear door on gas struts, marine-grade 5052 aluminium construction, seals and drainage around every opening for dust and corrugations, and a powder-coated matte black finish.

Raptor and Super Duty

The Raptor shares its tub with the standard Ranger of the same generation, so no Raptor-specific brackets are needed. A PX3 Raptor takes the PX canopy fitment and a Next-Gen Raptor takes the Next-Gen fitment.

The Ranger Super Duty is a new release. Its canopy is built to Next-Gen tub dimensions, but because early vehicles can vary, send us your tub measurements or build details before you order.

Weight, payload and roof load on the Ranger

A FORGED X dual cab canopy weighs from around 60 kg, depending on the vehicle and the side option. Everything you add counts towards your Ranger's GVM — the canopy, racks, drawers, water, fuel, passengers and gear — so add up the full setup and compare it with the payload on the compliance plate. Keeping the canopy light is what lets many owners stay within their factory GVM.

On the Ranger canopy, the roof takes 150 kg on the move and 300 kg when parked — bars and rack included. That covers a rooftop tent: keep tent and bars inside the dynamic rating when driving, and tent, bedding and people inside the static rating at camp.

Fitting a canopy to the Ranger

The Ranger canopy goes on with clamps to the factory tub rail, using the hardware supplied — no cutting, no drilling, and nothing permanent. If you sell the ute, the canopy comes off and the tub is as it was.

We fit canopies at 21 Moss Street, Slacks Creek, in Brisbane, or send them on pallet freight to any state for your own fitter. Seals, struts, glass and mounting hardware are kept on the shelf if you ever need a part.

Racks, tracks and locking

Full-length roof tracks are built into the Ranger canopy, so bars, platforms, awnings, recovery boards, solar and light bars bolt on without drilling. Yakima track-mount gear fits directly — no adaptor plates — and other common bolt-in systems fit the same track.

Add the optional central locking kit and one press of the factory key locks the canopy with the cab. It plugs into the existing wiring.

Ranger canopy questions

Will my PX Ranger canopy fit a Next-Gen Ranger?

No. The Next-Gen tub is wider and a different shape. You need the Next-Gen canopy.

Does the Raptor need a different canopy?

No. The Raptor uses the same tub as the standard Ranger of its generation.

Does the Next-Gen canopy fit the Volkswagen Amarok NF?

Yes. The NF Amarok is built alongside the Next-Gen Ranger and shares its tub.

Does the PX canopy fit the Mazda BT-50?

Yes, the UP and UR BT-50 (2012 to 2021). It was built on the PX Ranger platform and uses the same dual cab tub.

Do you make a Ranger single cab or super cab canopy?

Yes, on request. The canopies listed in this guide are made for the dual cab tub, and single cab or super cab versions are made to order. Send us your Ranger's year, cab type and tub measurements and we will come back to you with a quote.
