Mazda BT-50 Canopy Guide: UP, UR and TF

Mazda BT-50 Canopy Guide: UP, UR and TF

The Mazda BT-50 has changed platform partner, and the canopy follows the platform. The UP and UR BT-50 was built alongside the PX Ford Ranger and uses its tub. The TF BT-50 is built on the current Isuzu D-MAX and uses that tub. FORGED X makes an aluminium canopy for each, with solid sides or sliding dog windows.

Which FORGED X canopy fits your BT-50

Canopy Series Years Notes
Mazda BT-50 UP & UR canopy UP, UR 2012–2021 Same tub as the PX Ranger
Mazda BT-50 TF canopy TF 2022 onwards Same tub as the 2020-on D-MAX

UP/UR or TF?

The UP and UR BT-50 has the rounded Mazda front end of the 2010s and shares its underpinnings with the PX Ranger. The TF is a completely different ute: it is based on the D-MAX and has slim headlights and a long, sculpted bonnet.

If your BT-50 was built around the changeover, check the front end or the compliance plate, or send us your VIN and we will confirm the fit.

Solid sides or dog windows on a BT-50

For a BT-50 XT or XS on trade or fleet duty, solid sides keep tools hidden and avoid side glass on site.

For an XTR, GT or SP set up for weekends away, dog windows give kerbside access and airflow through the tub.

Both options have a glazed lift-up rear door on gas struts, marine-grade 5052 aluminium construction, seals and drainage around every opening for dust and corrugations, and a powder-coated matte black finish.

Weight, payload and roof load on the BT-50

A FORGED X dual cab canopy weighs from around 60 kg, depending on the vehicle and the side option. Everything you add counts towards your BT-50's GVM — the canopy, racks, drawers, water, fuel, passengers and gear — so add up the full setup and compare it with the payload on the compliance plate. Keeping the canopy light is what lets many owners stay within their factory GVM.

The roof is rated to 150 kg dynamic, while driving, and 300 kg static, while parked. Include the weight of your bars or rack in that total. A rooftop tent is fine on the BT-50 canopy as long as the tent and bars stay within 150 kg on the move, and the tent, bedding and occupants within 300 kg when parked.

Fitting a canopy to the BT-50

Every FORGED X canopy clamps to the factory tub rail with the supplied hardware. There is no cutting and no drilling, and the canopy can come off again later with the BT-50 tub left as it was.

Fitting is available at our Slacks Creek centre in Brisbane — contact us to book and we will confirm the details for your vehicle. Canopies are also sent Australia-wide on pallet freight for fitting by your own installer. Spare seals, struts, glass and mounting hardware are held in stock at Slacks Creek.

Racks, tracks and locking

The roof has built-in tracks along its full length. Racks, awnings, recovery board mounts, solar panels and light bars bolt straight down, with no drilling. Yakima track-mount accessories have been tested as a direct fit with no adaptor plates, and the track profile also takes other common bolt-in systems.

An optional plug-and-play central locking kit connects to the BT-50's existing wiring, so the factory key locks the cab and the canopy together.

BT-50 canopy questions

Does a UR BT-50 canopy fit the TF BT-50?

No. The TF uses the D-MAX tub, which is different.

Does the TF BT-50 canopy fit an Isuzu D-MAX?

Yes. The TF BT-50 and the 2020-on D-MAX share the same tub.

Does the UP/UR BT-50 canopy fit a PX Ranger?

Yes. They share the same dual cab tub.

Do you make a BT-50 single cab or freestyle cab canopy?

Yes, on request. The canopies listed in this guide are made for the dual cab tub, and single cab or freestyle cab versions are made to order. Send us your BT-50's year, cab type and tub measurements and we will come back to you with a quote.
